when pigs fly … expect the unbelievable

The Equal Pay Act was passed effective June 10, 1963 — over 50 years ago.  President Kennedy stated, as he signed the bill: [this act will end] the unconscionable practice of paying female employees less wages than mail employees for the same job.”

In 1963, the President’s Commission on the Status of Women had determined that women earned 59 cents to every dollar earned by a man who held the same job.

Now — fifty years later, women earn 77 cents to every dollar earned by a man who holds the same job.

This pay gap has huge consequences not only to women, but to the families they form a part of:

This wage gap costs the average full-time female worker from $700,000 to $2 million during her lifetime.

When all relevant career and family attributes are taken into account, there is still a significant gap in earnings between men and women.

I was disappointed to find that female lawyers are not immune from this disparity.  According to Laurel Bellows, former ABA president:  “Female equity partners in the 200 largest firms, who do comparable work to men, earn 89 percent of the compensation of their male peers.”

Institutional bias is costing your family money.  it’s time to do something.
