Question: Have you ever thought about running for office?
Women  10% responded “I have seriously considered it”, 33% responded “It has crossed my mind”, 57% responded “I have never thought about it.”  This is compared with the following responses from men,

19% responded “I have seriously considered it”, 40% responded “It has crossed my mind”, 41% responded “I have never thought about it.”

Get that:  Well over 1/2 of the men in America have thought about running for office!

The survey indicated that women receive less encouragement to run for office than men.  32% of women responders had received a suggestion that they run for office from someone involved in the political arena, while 43% of male responders had received such a suggestion.  The survey further indicates that an individual who had received such encouragement was 200% more likely to run for office than someone who had not received such encouragement.

Get that:  Encouragement goes a long way.  Look around you.  Encourage women to run!

During calendar 2004 and 2005, Lawless and Fox collected information from more that 3,700 lawyers, business leaders, executives, educators and political activists, which they identified as the professions that typically precede candidates, and the self-perception and motivation regarding running for or holding political office.  The ultimate conclusion:  women who share the same personal characteristics and professional credentials as men express significantly lower levels of political ambition to hold elective office.  The two key factors which they believe explain this finding are:  (1) women are less likely than men to be encouraged to run for office and (2) women are significantly less likely than men to view themselves as qualified to run for office.
